What made you decide to become a naturopath?

Over a decade ago I was suffering from adult acne. I struggled to figure out why my skin suddenly started to break out, considering I had clear skin all throughout my teen years. I finally stumbled across a Google article about how the liver and gut are connected to our skin and decided to visit a local naturopath in my area (I didn’t even know what they did to be honest but her blog posts made a lot of sense!). I was put on a liver detox and cleaned up my diet- and voila- clear skin!

After that experience I knew I had to make this information more accessible to others who were struggling like I was. So I went back to school and became a naturopathic doctor!

What is the best thing about your job?

Every day is different! I love being a detective when it comes to my patients’ health. I want to help them feel better AND help them discover what is at the root cause of their symptoms. Education is a big part of what I do - and I LOVE to teach!

What is the most challenging aspect?

Unfortunately there is still a lot of misinformation out there on what health truly is.

So many people are told that they just have to ‘live with’ their symptoms if there isn’t a medication to mask their symptoms.

I am regularly explaining to people that many of their symptoms are an indicator that we need to fix something on the inside. Just because something is common, doesn’t mean it's normal. Symptoms like fatigue, bloating, hair loss, IBS or infertility often have a root cause - we just need to find it!

What's one of the most surprising things you've learned in your career that you wish you would've known years ago?

Less is more. Doing too much, too soon can be overwhelming on the body. This can slow down healing and progress overall. I now approach my treatment plans for patients step-by-step so that we can see lasting results.
